Tell Us About Training Needs
I’ve had the opportunity to work with George several years ago when first training our dog. To this day, I still reference George for any sort of questions regarding training. Being able to take classes with him has enabled our dog to learn and grow in a positive environment, as well as us growing and learning as pet parents. He didn’t just tell us how to train our dog, but showed us and gave us tools we still utilize years later. George is very knowledgeable and wise beyond his years when it comes to working with animals. I can honestly say we have always enjoyed our classes with him as he is energetic, fun, and extremely passionate about his work. He is invested in working with animals (and their humans!) and has always gone the extra mile to make certain that our animals receive quality training in his care as well as in the home. I would highly recommend George to any pet owner looking for training, as I can personally say, he is one of the best!
George is a terrific addition to the dog training world of the San Francisco Bay Area. He has great passion for all aspects of dog training, from the artistry of competition training to the effective practicality of pet dog training that results in truly obedient and happy companions. If you’re dealing with social behavior problems, I would recommend seeking out Jorge for an evaluation and advice. He is someone who will actually come to you and be hands-on in helping you and your dog learn better ways to live in harmony, and not just give you a head halter and a handout. Jorge is equally kind to dogs and people, and a trainer with the ability to think outside of the box to find a way to help solve problems in ways appropriate for each dog and family. If you’re ready to see some changes in your dog’s behavior and are ready to do some truly effective training to improve your relationship with the dog, talk to Jorge. You’ll still have to do your share of the work, but you will know exactly what you need to do, and will have the support you need.
We’re so glad we found George! We’re first time dog owners with two boys and that two of a large breed dog. We had some biting issues that George gave us really easy solutions to and now we’re doing leash training with him and making great progress. His technique is very easy to apply and understand and he caters lessons according to your needs which is much better than standard lesson plans offered by others that may or may not work for your dog. We have a much more well behaved puppy thanks to him and hoping to have a very well trained adult dog.

where wiil my dog stay during his program?
During your dog’s program, your dog will spend the majority of his time in with the trainer at their home setting. We’ve found this is the best way for dogs to get round-the-clock care, and individual attention.
CAN MY DOG COME HOME EARLY IF THEY’RE DOING WELL? CAN THEY STAY LONGER IF THEY’RE NOT DOING WELL?
When you sign up for your Board and Train, we write a custom program for your dog that utilizes every day they are with us. We do not send dogs home early. We want to proof them in as many environments as possible to make sure the training results last.
If your dog is discovered to have more issues than previously known or is struggling, we will call to discuss options with you. Once you have realistic expectations of what to expect, you can decide to keep your dog here for longer time. If you are torn between a longer and shorter program we strongly encourage you to make this decision before sending your dog to us.
Good dog training is like making a layer cake. Imagine you’ve already baked a 3 layer cake, and then you decide you want a 7 layer cake. Can you do it? Yup. Will it look as good as if you had started knowing you were making a 7 layer cake from the beginning? No. A dog here for 3 weeks who adds 4 more weeks in the middle of his program will only get 4 weeks learning the more advanced commands instead of the full 7. It’s much harder for us as trainers, and so we do not offer the same discounts on additional time if you add to your program once your dog is with us.
what is the difference beetween board and train vs private lessons?
Board and Train means your dog will be staying with us for the entire duration of the training, which ranges from 3 to 8 weeks. When your dog stays with us, it allows us to see their true behavior once they become more comfortable. It usually takes a few days for a dog to adapt to a new environment, and from there we can build a trusting relationship with them. Your dog will be learning 24/7, as even on their downtime we are teaching them to be calm inside their kennels or on their placemats. They quickly learn to respect their home and not treat it as a playground. The quicker they learn house rules, the quicker they get to play! Dogs learn from basic commands on-leash, to off-leash commands at an expert level. We love going on training field trips, which means our boarding students get to enjoy trips every week to the pet stores, department stores, parks, and even to our favorite coffee shops! Being in different environments helps dogs explore different opportunities to learn manners outdoors with real life experiences.
Once your dog graduates from our Academy, we will then teach you the how to communicate with your dog so you can easily maintain the training at home and continue effortlessly with your every day lives! Private sessions are great if you are willing to put the time into learning how to train your dog on your own. Sessions are held twice per week, and the duration of each class is roughly one hour. With our guidance, you will learn how to teach your dog basic on leash commands. Once your dog has learned commands on leash, you can keep coming back to advance your dog little by little, depending on you and your dog’s training pace. It is typically a longer process, and if you don’t do your training homework on the days we don’t meet, your dog will not be able to learn as quickly, therefore not seeing effective results. Any program works if you put the time into it, and we thrive on seeing you succeed with your pup!
how should i Keep Up with my Dog's Training After a Board and Training Program?
When you send your dog to board and train, there are some limitations to be aware of. Most programs are extremely beneficial and your dog will learn many important new skills, including new commands, impulse control, and other good behaviors. But dogs are not great at generalizing and your dog may not realize at first that the behaviors she learned at boarding school still apply inside your home.
You also want to be sure that you are building a lasting relationship with your dog. A large part of this relationship depends on the communication between you and your dog, and is perfected through training.
To help your dog keep up the training skills acquired at board and train and prevent your dog from falling back into old unwanted behaviors, use the following steps:
- Pay Attention During the Take Home Lessons – At a reputable board and train, your dog trainer will also share with you all the skills you need to know when you get your dog back. This includes what new skills your dog learned and their commands, how to use any new tools such as e-collars, and strategies to encourage your dog’s good behavior in a new environment.
- Stay Consistent with Reinforcing Behavior – It can be exciting to have your dog back after a week or more at board and train. But if you immediately let her go back to her old ways without correction, she will interpret boarding school as . temporary break from her normal routine of jumping on furniture, being hyperactive, and ignoring your commands. Continue to reinforce the behaviors you want and correct the behaviors you don’t from the moment your dog gets home.
- Continue Training – Now that your dog has basic obedience, keep up on those skills and teach new ones with regular training sessions. This helps reinforce that your dog’s new good manners apply everywhere and strengthens that bond between the two of you that makes training really impactful.
- Maintain Structure – At most dog boarding schools, your dog will have a lot of structure throughout her day in terms of when she walks, eats, trains, and plays. This routine is valuable for dogs so set up your own routine of training and physical activity at home and continue to follow through to create a similar structure to what your dog experienced at board and train.
Finally, do not panic if your dog seems to return to earlier behaviors shortly after she comes back home or even seems to get worse. Your dog is learning how her new skills apply in her familiar environment, which can be challenging when she may not have been asked to model those behaviors before. Continue to follow the guidelines that your board and train facility provided and reach out for help if you need additional advice. Dog training is something that relies on both you and your pup, and it will be a learning experience for both of you. Dog owners who can stay patient and consistent while also following the advice of their trainer will help their dog have the smoothest possible transition from board and train back into being a full-time member of your family.
Can you train my dog in two weeeks?
Two weeks is just barely enough time for the dog to adjust to the new routine and start understanding commands. Still, even at this point, they are just becoming ready to practice their learned skill set in various environments. We can definitely work on 2 key behaviors on that time frame if you are planning a short vacation and would like some improvement on your dog’s behavior. We can show you some improvement during that time , provide training notes, and videos for you to continue the progress at home. Most commonly requested behaviors for a 2 week board and train program are: Leash walking, door dashing, Or recalls.
what if my puppy needs to get vaccinated during the time they are in board and train school?
Many times when puppies start their training program at 10 weeks of age, they still will need a set or two of vaccinations. We take your puppy’s health and well being very seriously; if your puppy needs any shots during their stay with us, we will take them to our local vet, and help make the vet visit a positive and well tailored experienced.
We work with a great vet in our neighborhood, who understands the importance of gentle handling to help with imprinting and relationship building..
do i also need to learn about dog training concepts while my dog is in training?
Yes! While your dog is in training you will have required reading material; literature about canine body language; notes on how to manage your dog, how to to interact with your puppy at home, how to play with your dog in a way that promotes good behaviors.
When everyone invests their time in learning the how-to’s of basic dog training, everyone wins. Board and train is not only a learning opportunity for your dog, but also for you!
what makes board and train programs fail?
Board and Train programs are very thorough training programs tailored to each individual dog and family. Many prospective clients believe that, by paying the registration fee, and waiting until graduation day the dog is going to fully listen when back at home, when in reality the primary handler at home, as well as the family members, need to learn the new way of ‘dancing’ with their dog.. how to play games… how to keep your dog engaged… how to reach to unexpected curved balls the universe will through at them while out in the real world!
Dog training is more about training the human than training the dog, having the dog response to commands is only 30% of the equation; it is important to keep in mind that once the dog comes back home the owner will be responsible for managing, practicing and making sure the dog is set up for success.
Training videos, and weekly updates will make training seem very easy, however it is highly important to really internalized the reasons behind each training game, the frequency in which they should be perform, and the consequences or results of not following through with the homework assignments provided.
When a dog goes through our training program, we place a lot of emphasis on making sure the dog understands each behavior the trainer teaches them. Training a dog is like teaching a child how to ride a bicycle, or teaching an adult how to drive a manual tramission vehicle; the skillset will stay with them for their lifetime, but it will only get better IF the behaviors are practiced. In other words, if you practice what you dog already knows in the way the dog trainer shows you, the dog will respond correctly and appropriately each time; equally, if once the dog returns home daily training practice starts ‘ falling by the wayside’ usually after the third week back, the dog will start ignoring commands, and misbehaving. Don’t worry the dog didn’t forget their training, BUT the human forgot to do their training homework.
Most canine behavioral problem are a result of incorrectly interacting with our dogs at home in a way that unknowingly to the new pet owner, promotes bad behaviors from our canine partners (petting the dog when the dog jumps, keeping the dog in a constant aroused mental state, rough housing which promotes biting, barking and chasing behaviors). Our trainers will provide a list of games, and activities on how to interact with your puppy in a way that more acceptable behaviors are promoted, and practiced in a fun way.
Training doesn’t have to be firm to have the dog respond to our commands, but we do have to be consistent in our way of handling and interacting with out dogs. We encourage better at home management over unfair corrections. The main focus of our Board and Train programs is how to teach each family member the correct way to interact with their new dog, after all the owner will be the new mentor once the dog returns home.
In our training programs, we encourage full participation, and weekly practice visits with your dog during their training time with us. We also love to meet for follow up sessions until everyone reaches their training goals. Once you are part of the training family, most of our graduate students become long time friends, we stay in communication with each other, throughout the years, and you will always have an experienced professional to reach out for any emergencies at anytime.
will my dog forget me?
No. In all our years of training, no dog has ever forgotten their owners. They may not realize their owners are in the room right away during mid-way lessons for example, but once they see/smell their owners they are always happy to see them.
How much will my dog be worked with?
As much as he needs! We work with dogs often throughout the day. For example, a puppy might receive 10 short training sessions in one day plus a field trip and play time with other dogs! A rehab dog may do longer sessions to work through behavioral issues, but will still be worked with often throughout the day. On average, board & trains do 10-15 sessions per day for a total of 1.5 to 3 hours of training (sometimes more).
Will I receive updates while my dog is in training?
Absolutely! We send emails, post to social media, and in some cases, we text photos and videos to our clients. We want you to always know how your dog is doing. That said, we do ask that you don’t ask for daily, detailed updates. We are busy training and want to use our time wisely. You can always ask for a quick update, but lengthy updates are usually sent weekly.
Do you ever come to my house?
Yes! We typically do graduation lessons in the client’s home (if the client is local) for all of our board & train programs that are two weeks and longer. This helps us to further generalize the dog’s training and allows us to answer specific questions clients have in regards to their home set-up and environment. In everything we do, we strive to set dogs and their owners up for success.
do i get to visist while my dog is in training?
Yes! We highly encourage you are in full participation of your dog’s training progress. Come meet with us every week for a quick in- person update lesson, hands on practice time, and small bites of canine learning theory. We only ask that you stay calm and neutral to your dog so you don’t encourage bad behaviors like jumping up on you, or being vocal. Allow the trainer to instruct you on they need you to interact with your dog during these practice lessons.
why is board and traing so long ?
There is no fastrack to education. In order for your dog to graduate, he or she needs to take the appropriate courses and study for an appropriate amount of time. Many training companies will try to entice you into shorter board and train programs, we can assure you that shorter programs are less effective than longer programs.
The first week is typically spent building a relationship with your dog and getting it used to its new environment. Once the dog is comfortable enough with us, then we can start asking him or her to do things for us.
By week 3 or 4, obedience is complete and the bond between dog and trainer is strong. We then introduce the dog to new environments and focus on social manners and anything specific to your lifestyle.
By week 6 or 8, you have a dog with a college education and the only thing left to do is reinforce the obedience and social manners at home.
When working with a dog that has emotional baggage (anxiety, phobias, reactivity, self destructive behaviors, Aggresion, bitting history, amongst man others), training time can take longer. Imagine, starting out with a new therapist for yourself, and needing to open up about your most deepest fears, and trauma… that is going take time! It is going to take time to build a relationship based in trust, free of fear of judgment. where open communication is encouraged to help with healing. The same applies when working with a dog that has deep emotional problems.
I just got my new puppy from the breeder, can they start board and training right away?
The youngest age we start puppies is 10 weeks, as we like to give families some time to exhaust their puppy fever wiggles. In that time new puppy owners can have the opportunity to take their puppy to the vet for a general check up, to make sure they are dewormed and have their second set of shots.
At 10 weeks of age, the puppy will be much more active and ready to learn. We will give you some basic exercises to do at home with your puppy from the time you first welcome them into your home, to the beginning of their first day of puppy camp.
will my dog be 'farmed' out to other locations during his trainng?
No. To keep the high quality control, and continuous performance, as well as safety, all the dogs in our Board and Train program spend their time in close proximity with their dog trainer. We will have field trips to local stores, and restaurant if their training goals require those outings.
do you offer boarding services only ?
Yes. We also offer holiday boarding, and short term stays with us.
Can You Guarantee My Dog Will Improve?”
While board and train programs have a high success rate in improving a dog’s behavior, it’s important to understand that every dog is an individual, and outcomes can vary.
We will help you:
- Set Realistic Expectations: Provide a clear understanding of what can be achieved within the program’s timeframe.
- Offer Follow-Up Support: Ensure you have the tools and knowledge to continue your dog’s progress at home.
- Emphasize Owner Involvement: Highlight the importance of your role in reinforcing and maintaining new behaviors.
Improvement is guarantee, and demonstrated through our weekly updates, training notes, and online classroom video lessons. Demonstrative training progress will depend on the dog’s background, the complexity of the behavior being addressed, the dog’s temperament and the owner’s commitment to following training recommendations.
In average, it will take same amount of time the dog has spent with the trainer during their board and train program for the dog to respond at the same speed, and same attention level to their owner back at home; in other words, if the dog has spent 4 weeks with the trainer doing their foundation program, 4 week after the dog returns home the dog, will respond similarly to the the owner, IF the family follows the homework assignments tailored to their training situations and goals.
There are many handling skills for the owner to learn; we will dissect each set of skills weekly to make sure the owner is not overwhelmed with having to practice all basic command each day. We want everyone to be successful and have fun learning. One of the most important factor once the dog returns home is having the owner adjust to setting aside time for training their dog based on the homework assignments sent forth by the instructor; as well as, learning the new way of how-to interact with the dog during off-times in the house.
The suggested new schedule will be clearly stated on your go home package handouts. Feel free to adjust time frames as long as the key exercise are practiced.
In most cases, pet owners will start feeling comfortable and in control of most training situations on the 5th week after the dog returns home, IF the owner follows the well paced out training instructions set by the trainer. We are here to help you succeed! We know life can get busy, and maintance training can be forgotten for a few days or weeks.Even after the full transition time ( in average 4-6 weeks after you dog returns home) our team will send text messages to make sure the end goal is still in focus, and everyone at home is doing their part, and catching any small training mishaps early on.
How Can I Ensure the Training Sticks Once We are Home with our dog?”
Ensuring the training sticks once back at home requires a few different factors:
- Consistency: Apply the commands and techniques you and your dog learned during the program consistently at home. Consistency helps reinforce the training and integrate it into your daily routine.
- Reinforcement: Use reinforcement and management techniques to encourage and reward desirable behaviors. This includes treats, praise, or playtime, depending on your dog’s motivation.
- Routine: Establish and maintain a routine that includes regular practice of the learned behaviors, exercise, and mental stimulation to keep your dog engaged and happy.
- Owner Education: Take advantage of any owner’s education the training program provides. Understanding the principles behind the training methods and how to apply them effectively is crucial for long-term success.
By following these practices, you can significantly increase the likelihood that the improvements made during the board and train program will be lasting, and beneficial for you and your dog.
What Happens If My Dog Needs More Training After the Program?
dIn cases where a dog may require additional training after the completion of a board and train program, most facilities offer several follow up options to ensure continued progress:
- Follow-Up Sessions: Many programs include or offer the option to purchase follow-up sessions where trainers can address any emerging issues, refine skills, or work on new behaviors.
- Remote Support: Facilities often provide remote support through phone calls, video chats, or email consultations to assist with questions and guide you through any challenges.
- Additional Training Packages: For dogs needing more extensive follow-up, some programs offer aditional training packages tailored to your dog’s specific needs.
The goal is to provide ongoing support to ensure the training’s effectiveness, and your satisfaction with your dog’s behavior.
